The moment we begin talking seriously with someone about when the Lord will return, we almost immediately hear the same response:<\/p>\n
Since the Lord said this, I naturally would not dare to overstep, or presume to speculate about things He has not revealed. Yet as I observe how different camps interpret Scripture, I notice a pattern: sometimes people add conditions to the Lord’s words that aren’t there, and other times they apply His conditional statements without limit, overlooking the conditions entirely. Is this statement in Matthew 24 tied to a specific stage in redemptive history? If so, how should we understand it today \u2014 after the Lord’s resurrection, ascension, and glorification?<\/p>\n
While the Lord was on earth, He took on the form of a servant and was made in human likeness. Though He is fully God, He willingly embraced humility, holding to the position of the Son of Man and submitting to the order God had established on earth. So after His death, resurrection, and ascension \u2014 would He still not know that day or hour? If He is now the Lord seated on the throne, should this statement be understood as eternally true in every state and season? Or was it spoken within a very specific context? This may be a question worth thinking through carefully.<\/p>\n
Something else worth noticing: the Lord said “that day or hour” \u2014 the original text speaks of “day” and “hour,” with no mention of “year” or “month.” I am not saying we will know the specific day or hour \u2014 I would not dare to claim that. But if the Lord meant that no knowledge of time whatsoever is possible, He could have said “no one knows the year, the month, the day, or the hour” \u2014 just as Revelation 9:15 describes: “And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind.” But the Lord did not phrase it that way. Our words may be imprecise, but God’s words never are. Praise God! God governs the year, the month, the day, and the hour \u2014 and the Lord did not say that the year or the general timeframe cannot be known. When the time comes, God will let those He has prepared know the broad picture, for He said “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, because the time is near,” and also “those who are wise will understand.”<\/p>\n
Regarding end-times prophecy, this is what God said in the days of Daniel:<\/p>\n
In Daniel’s day, these prophecies were sealed. Even someone as godly as Daniel could see the visions, yet he could not understand their meaning \u2014 because the time of the end had not yet come, and the words remained closed.<\/p>\n
Yet in the final chapter of Revelation, the word that came to John was this:<\/p>\n
If God says “do not seal,” it means that when the time comes He will grant illumination \u2014 for only God’s revelation today can open up the understanding of what He spoke in ages past.<\/p>\n
And God also told Daniel:<\/p>\n
In context, this “going here and there” is linked to “the time of the end” and the “increase of knowledge” \u2014 perhaps telling us that in the last days, there will be people who diligently search and seek to understand what God has embedded in His Word about the end times. When God opens the scroll at the appointed time, those who seek will find.<\/p>\n
God then goes further through Daniel to show who will understand:<\/p>\n
May we be among those who are “purified, made spotless and refined” before God \u2014 so that in the last days, we may come to know more of His heart.<\/p>\n
Among Christians today, two extremes are common. One is a preoccupation with constant calculation \u2014 always trying to work out the exact time of the Lord’s return. The other is using “no one knows” as a reason to remain indifferent to all end-times revelation, with no desire to search or understand. My sense is that true waiting is neither driven by human calculation nor rooted in human ignorance \u2014 it is a humble, watchful readiness lived out in the light God gives, as we prepare to meet Him.<\/p>\n
If we fix our minds on calculating dates, we risk drifting from what the Lord truly intends \u2014 because pinning down a date does not produce genuine watchfulness. True readiness is not about knowing exactly which day, but about standing before the Lord in humility, purity, and refinement, as people who are ready at any moment. Yet setting aside date-calculation is not the same as adopting an attitude of indifference or willful ignorance about the end times \u2014 for no one can truly be watchful while spiritually blind.<\/p>\n
May the Lord grant us the understanding we need through His Word, and may we live in genuine watchfulness and readiness in His light.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
